Living in Volatile Times

The times we live in are strange, volatile, and dangerous. Every generation has faced turmoil, from wars to pandemics, yet we must still confront this present darkness. Political upheaval, hatred, and deception surround us. We have watched people, both citizens and undocumented, be targeted with visceral disdain in Latino and Black communities under the banner of the President of the United States. While some of his power is real, much of his leadership has been self-serving and outrageous. This is a man who speaks hate at a funeral where a widow offered forgiveness. As my pastor would say, that is the language of an unregenerate, uncircumcised heart.
Scripture: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world.” (Ephesians 6:12)

Satangelicals and a False Gospel

The deeper darkness is not just him but also the evangelical right that empowers and prays for him while standing in direct opposition to God’s commands about how to treat strangers. I no longer call them evangelicals. They are satangelicals, doing the will of their father, the devil. The so-called pro-lifers have proven themselves not to be pro-living. They can call Democrats demons, tell members to leave their churches if they vote differently, spew vile speech, and still claim Christ. This is what I mean by this present darkness.

Scripture: “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness.” (Isaiah 5:20)

Churches in Compromise

The Gospel no longer leads our churches. Politicians act without restraint because Christians have modeled reckless behavior. Many churches have become dens of false teaching, sexual immorality, and political idolatry. Even Pastor Voddie, a strong preacher and apologist now gone to glory, aligned his thoughts about President Obama with white supremacy. When he joked about what was “truly prayed” in response to a thank-you letter, the crowd laughed. We all knew what it meant. Today, the word woke has become a slur, hurled at anyone who is pro-Black, pro-equality, or pro-choice. It is used against anyone who believes America was not founded on Christian principles or who refuses to support Donald Trump.

Scripture: “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.” (2 Timothy 4:3)

White Supremacy in the Pulpit

The way “woke” has been twisted shows the power of white supremacy. Charlie Kirk called George Floyd a scumbag. Black conservatives repeat the lie that Floyd died from fentanyl, ignoring what the world saw in that video. This is the power of satangelicals. They masquerade as servants of Christ while living and speaking in ways that are vile, divisive, and destructive.

Scripture: “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.” (2 Timothy 3:5)

My Convictions as a Christian

Make no mistake, I am a Christian who does not believe in abortion. I lived through one in my youth, and I will never forget it. I hold pro-life values, but I also believe it is not my decision or the government’s decision to control a woman’s body. If there are no laws regulating men’s bodies, there should be none regulating women’s. I believe marriage is between a man and a woman, yet I recognize I have no power to dictate who others can love. And when Republicans pay for abortions, get caught with child pornography, or prey on children online, it becomes clear why our politics are in chaos, and our nation is spiraling.

Scripture: “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” (Matthew 7:3)

Evil Cannot Defeat Evil

There is no shortage of darkness today. I did not even know who Charlie Kirk was until Simone Biles withdrew from the Olympics. I watched him tear her down, calling her weak, a traitor, and a loser. Those are not the words of a Christian, and if they are, they come from a Christian who needs to repent and ask God to purge the racism from his heart. Yet I must also say that celebrating this man’s assassination was deplorable. Evil cannot be repaid with evil. From Emmett Till to Medgar Evers, Black America knows all too well what it is to see murder celebrated, but we cannot answer hatred with hatred. And we cannot make a saint out of a man who targeted thirteen percent of the U.S. population. His wife deserves to grieve in peace, free from harassment or judgment. Her grief and how she handles it is her business. Leave the woman ALONE!!!!

Scripture: “Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.” (Romans 12:17)

A Word to Agents of Darkness

And to federal agents and ICE officers, I say this: I hope you sleep well at night. I hope your children ask you how you can live with what you do. I hope they find the courage to tell you the truth, that you are carrying out the orders of a tyrannical leader who will discard you just as he discarded the officers at the Capitol. satan is at the helm, and he will sacrifice your life and your livelihood as Hitler sacrificed his own followers. You are not defending liberty or freedom. You are not upholding the principles this country claims to cherish. You are agents of darkness carrying out demonic orders of spiritual proportions. And one day you will have to answer for your treatment of human beings, whether in this life or in the life to come.

Scripture: “For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.” (Ecclesiastes 12:14)

Lord, we are but mere sinners. We need you to help us and guide us during these times. We know, in Matthew, that you said things will wax worse and worse, yet we also know that you hear the prayers of your people. I am asking you to stay the hand of the enemy, not to leave us to our own devices, but to help us, save us, and let love have its perfect work through us. We do not align with nature in politics, education, or our communities. Help us turn from our wicked ways and see your face and repent that you may heal the lands of our hearts and lead us back to you.
