Reflecting on my time at UIC, I couldn’t help but recall the story of Ruth E. George. Her vibrant spirit, her dreams of academic success, all tragically cut short. As I pass by the memorial outside the SEO building, I offer a silent greeting to Ruth, wishing her a good morning or goodnight, knowing she can’t hear me but hoping somehow the sentiment reaches her.

Ruth’s life was taken by a felon out on parole, highlighting the failings of our criminal justice system. He gets 30 years but Ruth got a life sentence by evil incarnate.

Yet, on her birthday, I choose not to dwell on these systemic failures but rather on the positive impact I can have on current students. I imagine crossing paths with Ruth, offering support and guidance as she navigates the challenges of university life, staying consistent with school, and dreaming of her future.

But these are mere fantasies, the “what ifs” that haunt those who knew Ruth. We can only hold onto memories and speculate on what could have been. On her special day, I offer a heartfelt birthday greeting to Ruth, hoping that somehow, someway, she can sense the love and remembrance surrounding her.

As a believer, I find solace in the belief that we will meet again beyond this life. Until then, I cherish the memories of Ruth and the enduring impact of her spirit on the UIC community. Happy Birthday, Ruth E. George.
